Case study · Offshore energy
Technical leadership on a major offshore pipelay system
Our principal engineer joined the client's project team as technical lead, helping to recover a stalled engineering programme after an extended suspension and take a large integrated pipelay system through certification, commissioning and full-scale trials.
- Engineering hours coordinated across five disciplines
- 30,000+
- Individual lifts in a heavy-lift campaign we supported, completed ahead of schedule
- 2000 t+
- Rigid pipe spooled, installed and recovered in trials we directed
- ≈1 km
- Integrated system and subsystems; we coordinated the certification process
- Certified

The system
A large, integrated offshore pipelay system for installing rigid and flexible pipelines in challenging marine environments. It comprised product storage reels and carousels, pipe tensioners, handling equipment, winches and a pipelay tower, with integrated hydraulic, electrical and control systems.
The challenge
After around 18 months of inactivity, equipment left exposed at the construction facility needed reassessment before work could resume. Engineering documentation and deliverable registers were incomplete or inconsistent, and mechanical, structural, hydraulic, electrical and software activities remained unresolved.
The remaining scope still included heavy-lift installation, multidisciplinary commissioning, independent certification and full-scale operational trials. Delivery depended on re-establishing technical control across the whole system while coordinating construction teams, specialist subcontractors and the client.

Our approach
What we did
Re-establishing engineering control
Working within the client's team, our principal engineer took technical leadership of the remaining engineering programme, coordinating more than 30,000 engineering hours across all disciplines.
An initial assessment established the status of every deliverable and allocated technical responsibility for each equipment package. Formal design reviews verified calculations, drawings and documentation, with open issues tracked through to closure.
Equipment design and pipelay analysis
Our principal engineer contributed to the design of many of the system's subsystems, including the pipeline initiation system, and to design modifications across most of the lay equipment.
Ahead of the operational trials he carried out full dynamic pipelay analysis, producing the pipelay tables used to run them: tensioner speed, tension and pipe exit position.
Verification and certification
The close-out covered mechanical and structural verification, hydraulic interfaces, electrical integration and control system functionality.
Our principal engineer held technical responsibility for coordinating certification, compiling and closing the design verification, inspection and test records that led to independent certification of the integrated system and its subsystems.
Construction and commissioning
On site, our principal engineer provided technical leadership through final construction and commissioning, supporting major installation lifts exceeding 2000 t. Close coordination between engineering, installation and construction teams brought the lifting campaign in ahead of schedule.
During commissioning he led multidisciplinary investigations into equipment failures, including a complex transmission fault traced to the interaction between drive and braking controls.
Operational trials
He engineered and helped establish a dedicated quayside pipe-spooling facility for full-scale trials: pipe handling arrangements, roller positioning, winch operating procedures and specialist alignment equipment.
Our principal engineer then acted as Operational Responsible Person for the spooling campaign, directing coordinated vessel and quayside operations from the control room through spooling of around 1 km of rigid pipe, offshore installation and recovery.

Outcomes
Our contributionto operational readiness
- Technical control re-established across a stalled multidisciplinary programme after an extended suspension.
- Significant commissioning issues resolved through structured technical investigations, and the heavy-lift campaign supported to completion ahead of schedule.
- Certification coordinated through to independent approval, and full-scale trials directed as Operational Responsible Person.
